STE, GENEVIEVE — A group of Ste. Genevieve High School students and staff recently returned from an unforgettable nine-day trip to Costa Rica, where they explored the country’s incredible biodiversity and natural wonders from coast to coast.
Led by SGHS teachers Mrs. Yamnitz and Mrs. Schwent, the group included students Alivia Bays, Miah Klein, Colin Haines, Kyler Gugel, Rori Hughes, Millie Huffman, Mylee Harmon, and Ashlyn Wezner. The travelers began their journey along the Caribbean coast and made their way west to the Pacific Ocean, experiencing a wide variety of Costa Rica’s most iconic landscapes and wildlife.
Highlights of the trip included:
- Visiting three national parks, spotting sloths, crocodiles, three species of monkeys, coatimundi, toucans, macaws, parrots, and vibrant tropical flora
- Ziplining through the rainforest canopy
- Whitewater rafting on the Sarapiquí River
- Kayaking near one of Costa Rica’s most active volcanoes
- Hiking on another active volcano and witnessing fumaroles, steaming vents, and bubbling mud pools
- Seeing the La Fortuna waterfall and relaxing in geothermal hot springs from the Arenal Volcano
- Taking a night tour and observing colorful poison dart frogs
- Snorkeling alongside sea turtles
The trip offered students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience science, culture, and adventure in a hands-on way, creating memories that will last forever.
Students interested in future travel opportunities are encouraged to consider next year’s international experience. SGHS teacher Halleh Fallert is planning a new educational trip abroad for 2026, and more details will be shared in the coming months. Stay tuned for updates on how Dragons can take their learning beyond the classroom and across the globe!
