Ste. Genevieve Co. property owners can now get protection from property fraud

STE. GENEVIEVE – Mary Jane White, the Ste. Genevieve County Recorder of Deeds, is pleased to announce that Ste. Genevieve County homeowners now have the capability to protect their most valuable investment – their home and real property – from property fraud.

What is property fraud?

Property fraud is one of the fastest growing white-collar crimes in the country.  It can be as simple as someone recording a fraudulent document making it look like they now own your home or property.

How can you protect yourself?

Subscribe to our free Document Alert service provided by the Ste. Genevieve County Recorder of Deeds office so that you are notified by email if any document has been recorded with the names that you choose when signing up for the service. Document Alert generates and sends automated email alerts detailing the recordings, so that you can determine whether the recordings are valid or if fraud has been committed.  There is no charge to sign up and receive email alerts. Document images may be viewed on iDocMarket for a small fee, or users may request a copy of the document by calling or visiting the Recorder’s office.

Will the notification service stop property fraud from occurring?

No. The Recorder of Deeds must record all documents complying with the Missouri State Statutes recording requirements, but it will notify property owners of any suspicious activity regarding their real estate so that they can take immediate action, instead of finding out months or years later.

Subscribe to the free service by going to Ste. Genevieve County’s website: stegencounty.org and click on the Recorder of Deeds section.  Follow the instructions under Document Fraud Alert to sign up for the service.
