Man dies after becoming entrapped in shut down oven

PERRYVILLE – The Perryville Police Department and Perry County Coroner has investigated the death of a 38-year-old Guatemalan national at the Gilster Marylee Cereal Plant in the 600 block of Old St. Mary’s Road in Perryville.

 

Officials identified the man as Nicolas Lopez Gomez who was employed by Gilster Mary Lee under the name Edward Avila.

 

According to the report the incident happened about 3:06 p.m. Thursday, June 26, 2025. That’s when Perryville Police Department officers were detailed to the Gilster Marylee Cereal Plant for a male stuck in an industrial oven that was shut down.

 

Upon arrival, officers, Emergency Medical Services, and the Perryville Fire Department attempted to render aid, but once they were able to gain access to the male, he was deceased. 

 

The Perry County Coroner, Meghan Ellis, was contacted at 3:25 pm and responded to the scene.

 

Through a concerted effort between the police department and the Coroner’s Office, the male was positively identified as Nicolas Lopez Gomez, a 38-year-old Guatemalan national who was working under the alias of Edward Avila.

 

Coroner Meghan Ellis said, “OSHA has been contacted concerning this accident and will be conducting its investigation.  Our offices will work with them to determine how this occurred.”
