Jeffco adds new biotechnology degree at Arnold Campus

HILLSBORO, Mo. — Starting this fall, Jefferson College will offer a new Associate of Applied Science in Biotechnology and a Biotechnology Certificate at its Arnold Campus, giving local students an opportunity to step directly into one of the region’s fastest-growing industries.

The new program focuses on biomanufacturing of biopharmaceuticals, industrial products such as biofuels, medical innovations, and research, as well as improving agriculture. Students will learn laboratory safety, handling of materials, fundamentals of genetics and DNA, laboratory methods and techniques, biological physics, pathogenesis and immunology. Graduates will be eligible to take the Biotechnology Aptitude and Competency Exam (BACE). This industry-recognized credential validates the core skills and knowledge of biotechnology professionals, particularly those in entry-level technician roles. Students can also transfer to four-year universities to continue their education in areas such as research, development and manufacturing.

“This program is about building a direct path from the classroom to a career,” said Dr. Dena McCaffrey, president of Jefferson College. “We’re proud to bring this kind of opportunity to our Arnold Campus and help meet the workforce needs of our region.”

The long-term goal for this new biotechnology program is to cultivate a highly skilled, adaptable workforce ready to meet the evolving demands of the biotechnology industry within our region and beyond. The college is committed to empowering students with the hands-on expertise and theoretical knowledge necessary to immediately contribute to research, development and manufacturing in critical areas like pharmaceuticals, diagnostics and sustainable bioproducts.

“Everything about this program is built around doing the work, not just learning about it,” said Dr. Cheryl Miller, a Biomedical Engineer and Research Scientist who will lead the program. “You’ll be in the lab from day one, using the same tools that employers use, with direct access to companies who are hiring.”

For local students who want to make an impact in healthcare, science, and technology, without waiting four years, Jefferson College’s biotech program offers a way to get started close to home. Enrollment is now open.
