JEFFERSON CITY – Senator Barbara Anne Washington, D-Kansas City, is proud to announce the Missouri Creating an Open World for Natural Hair, or Missouri CROWN Act, was passed by the Legislature on May 12 and is now being considered by the governor. Senate Bill 160 bans hair-based discrimination in elementary and secondary public schools.
“Prohibiting hair-based discrimination has been a priority of mine since taking the oath of office,” said Sen. Washington. “Young people of the African diaspora deserve to be treated fairly and encouraged to embrace their heritage, regardless of their natural hair or protective hairstyles.”
Among its many provisions, SB 160 also strengthens college hazing laws and ensures student associations do not cause harm on campuses.
