PERRYVILLE — The Perry County Historical Society is undertaking an architectural survey of the town’s original 100 town lots as laid out in 1821.

It is hoped that the survey might serve as the groundwork for establishing an historic district within the City of Perryville, according to the the plat of the original lots, shown in the photo.

On August 7, 1821, Bernard Layton deeded 51 acres of his original Spanish land grant to the Perry County commissioners in exchange for one town lot. Perry County needed a county seat and a courthouse.

Fifty-three lots sold for a total of $1,486.25, which was used to build the first courthouse in 1825.
