Governor signs ‘Let Politicians Lie Act’; Attorney General tries to overturn abortion will

JEFFERSON CITY – On Thursday April 24th, Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe signed SB 22, the Let Politicians Lie Act, which will allow partisan elected officials to trick voters by using unfair and dishonest ballot language on citizen-initiatives. SB 22 also opened the door for the Attorney General to work outside the judicial process to appeal court decisions he doesn’t agree with, a transparent political effort to circumvent the recent injunction allowing the provision of abortion care to resume in Missouri.

Statement from Abortion Action Missouri’s executive director Mallory Schwarz: Let’s be clear what this is really about: attacking abortion providers and undermining the will of the people. With SB 22, anti-democracy, anti-abortion politicians put a target on the very same processes Missourians used to get abortion on the ballot in an attempt to undermine and overturn our victory. We proved in November that Missourians want reproductive freedom, including access to abortion. The Amendment 3 campaign won in court time and again, and overcame any obstacle the state tried to impose. Now, because they can’t beat us, they’re changing the rules of the game.”

Schwarz continued, “The Governor signing this attack on democracy just shows that the state is power hungry and obsessed with controlling Missourian’s lives, taking away their personal and private decision-making, and inserting itself into their bedrooms and doctors’ offices. Abortion access is essential, Missourians proved it’s popular, and despite yet another blatantly political attack, we remain confident the court will ultimately find it constitutional.”
