CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO — Southeast Missouri State University’s student newspaper, The Arrow, brought home 21 awards at the 2025 Missouri College Media Association Awards on April 12, including first place for Best Overall Newspaper in Division 2-for the second year in a row.
Three members of the Arrow staff are from the River Region: Juliette Abernathy of Chester, Rylee Schremp of Perryville and Arie Taylor of Ste. Genevieve
The publication earned top honors in categories such as investigative reporting, website design, and multimedia packaging, and dominated the campus engagement category, taking three of the four awards available. Many of the winning entries were developed through classroom assignments, highlighting the integration of academic work and professional practice.
Faculty members Dr. Tamara Buck and Michael Simmons were credited for their role in guiding students through hands-on, real-world journalism experiences. The Arrow serves as both a platform for students to develop portfolios and a testament to the strength of SEMO’s mass media program, which consistently produces competitive and award-winning student journalists.
