Life can seem like a never-ending series of emotional adjustments and unique experiences for the 1.6 million children in military families. It can be the challenge of coping with sadness or worry when their service member parent leaves the home for deployments.  It can be the impact on children having to change locations, schools and friends when military families are required to move every two to three years.

In recognition and celebration of these children and their sacrifices, April was designated as Month of the Military Child by U.S. Defense Secretary, Caspar Weinberger in 1986. Purple Up! Day — April 15 — is part of the month-long celebration. Purple symbolizes a combination of the colors of each branch of the U.S. military: Army green, Navy blue, Air Force blue, Marines red, and Coast Guard blue.

Auxiliary members wore their Purple Up! Shirts at their recent meeting on Tuesday, April 1st to encourage others to participate in Purple Up! Day on Tuesday, April 15, 2025.  Wear purple clothing and be prepared to share information about these youth and their challenges.  If someone asks why you’re wearing purple, help spread the word about the ALA’s commitment to military children and families, service members, and veterans.
