Missouri treasurer marks National School Choice Week

JEFFERSON CITY—Missouri State Treasurer Scott Fitzpatrick Monday recognized National School Choice Week.

“As a parent of children with special needs, I understand that education is not one-size-fits-all. I am also the product of public education and the son of a teacher so I value the important role public education plays. However, children learn differently and while some can excel in their local school district, others might need something more specialized or more challenging. School choice makes that possible,” Treasurer Fitzpatrick said. “My staff and I are working to develop and implement Missouri’s new K-12 scholarship program, MOScholars, and are looking forward to the day when all Missouri children receive quality education that meets their needs as they deserve.”

In 2021, the Missouri General Assembly passed HB349 and SB86 which established the Missouri Empowerment Scholarship Accounts Program, MOScholars. The law provides for state tax credits for contributions to nonprofit Education Assistance Organizations (EAOs). Under the guidelines set forth in the governing statute, qualifying Missouri K-12 students may then apply for scholarships from participating EAOs to attend a K-12 institution other than their designated public school.
