Rep. David Friess calls for repeal of Illinois Trust Act

RED BUD – Southern Illinois Republican Rep. David Friess says the Illinois Trust Act, which was enacted in 2017, needs to be repealed.

In a post on his Facebook page, Friess said the Trust Act “prevents state and local law enforcement from assisting the federal government with civil immigration enforcement but allows coordination when there is a federal criminal warrant.”

“So, what does this mean for the average Illinois resident?

“It means that individuals that are in our country illegally, who commit a violent crime, are released back into our communities after they serve time in the Department of Corrections.

“For example, on January 26, 2025, Chicago resident George Levin was tortured and killed in his residence. The suspects are “undocumented immigrants.” One is from Ecuador and the other from Venezuela. If these two are convicted of Mr. Levin’s murder, they will serve time in an Illinois prison. Then, because of the Trust Act, they will then be released back into our community.

“The Trust Act prohibits anyone associated with the Department of Corrections from contacting ICE to let ICE know that two convicted “undocumented immigrants” are being released. We do NOT want these people released back onto our streets and into our communities. They need to be returned to their country of origin.
