STE. GENEVIEVE – One person was treated for smoke inhalation and another was taken to a St. Louis hospital for treatment following a structure fire in Ste. Genevieve early Monday (January 13) morning.
Ste. Genevieve Fire Chief Ken Steiger stated. “The Ste. Genevieve Fire Department was dispatched for a structure fire at 1:35 a.m. in the 700 block of Center Drive. The first fire officer arrived at 1:41a.m. reporting heavy fire from the side in the basement of the building. The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes and crews remained on the scene until 6:30 a.m. overhauling the building and for fire investigation.”
Chief Steiger said the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to assist with the investigation due to injuries to the occupants.
The fire was determined to be accidental electrical in origin.
The Ste Genevieve Fire Department was assisted by the Zell, St Mary, and Ozora Fire Departments, the Ste Genevieve County Ambulance and Ste Genevieve Police Department.
This was the third call for the department in less than 24 hours.
The department responded to a vehicle accident and a fire alarm at a local business on Sunday prior to the fire.
The department would like to remind everyone of the importance of having working smoke detectors in their home and not to overload extension cords.
