The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services Team opens cold weather warming sites and shelters

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – With the first snowfall landing across the region over Thanksgiving weekend, and chilling temperatures to accompany it, The Salvation Army’s Emergency and Disaster Services unit is gearing up at its Cold Weather Warming Sites and Shelters throughout Missouri and Southern Illinois. Warming Sites and Shelters are activated when a Cold Advisory is issued, signaling that the Cold Index or air temperature is expected to reach 32 degrees or below freezing.

Freezing weather can be dangerous, and The Salvation Army aims to be a place of hope and safety for those who are experiencing homelessness, or may be having trouble paying their utility bills.

In addition to serving as a safe space to warm up, The Salvation Army provides food and hydration, as well as overnight shelter in some locations.
