Funding opportunity for new EV charging stations

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation have announced the second official notice of funding opportunity through the Illinois National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program, which will provide up to approximately $24 million for the construction of charging stations across the state. The second funding opportunity aims to make approximately 20 awards, building upon the 37 awards from the  announced by IDOT in September and aligning with Gov. JB Pritzker’s goal to have 1 million electric vehicles on Illinois roads by 2030.

“Illinois is leading the electric vehicle revolution, and my administration continues to build on our momentum by investing in EV charging infrastructure across our state,” said Gov. Pritzker. “Through our Illinois NEVI Program, this second funding opportunity will support the construction of charging stations to provide convenient access to sustainable transportation for all Illinoisans. I highly encourage all eligible entities to apply to this funding opportunity.”

Applications for funding must be submitted by Dec. 17 at 11:59 p.m. All application materials can be found on IDOT’s website at idot.click/drive-electric. Awards are anticipated to be announced in early 2025.

Selected locations will have at least four fast-charging ports, each of which can fully charge a typical EV in less than 30 minutes. When complete, these projects will provide access to fast charging at least every 50 miles along all Illinois interstates.

“Under the leadership of Gov. Pritzker, IDOT is committed to creating and supporting safe, reliable options for how people wish to travel,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “The funding made available via our federal partners will help sustain a charging infrastructure that benefits drivers in communities large and small, while also providing economic opportunity by drawing travelers and generating revenue for local businesses.”

To explain the funding opportunity and how to apply, IDOT is hosting an informational webinar Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. Register at the link provided on IDOT’s drive electric website. A recording of the webinar also will be posted to the site for reference throughout the application period.
