ST. LOUIS – As the holiday season approaches, kitchens across the country will be buzzing with activity and filled with festive meals and delicious treats. One ingredient that consistently plays a starring role in holiday cooking is heavy whipping cream. Whether you’re blending velvety sauces, creating fluffy toppings, or crafting rich desserts, heavy whipping cream is a versatile and essential ingredient that brings a touch of indulgence to any dish.
The Magic Behind Heavy Whipping Cream
Heavy whipping cream is a dairy product known for its luxurious texture and rich flavor. “The secret lies in its high fat content — typically around 36 to 40 percent — which gives it the ability to thicken and whip into soft peaks,” said Jessica Kassel, a nutrition educator and registered dietitian with the St. Louis District Dairy Council. This makes it perfect for everything, from adding body to soups and sauces to putting the finishing touch — or dollop — on holiday pies. How It’s Made Heavy whipping cream begins with fresh milk sourced from local dairy farms. The milk is separated in a centrifuge, a process that divides the cream from the milk. The cream that rises to the top is collected and then pasteurized to ensure safety and extend its shelf life. “The result is a liquid that is rich in butterfat—the key ingredient that allows heavy whipping cream to achieve its smooth consistency,” Kassel said.
During the holiday season, heavy whipping cream can bring a variety of dishes to new heights. Here are easy ways to incorporate this ingredient into festive cooking plans:
• Whipped Toppings: Nothing complements a slice of pie or a cup of hot cocoa like a generous dollop of freshly whipped cream. Simply whip heavy cream with a touch of sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form for a decadent topping that is sure to impress.
• Rich Sauces: Use heavy whipping cream as the base in sauces to drizzle over pasta, meats, or vegetables. Its creamy richness adds depth and flavor, making even the simplest dishes seem luxurious. • Decadent Desserts: From cheesecakes to rich chocolate ganache, heavy whipping cream is a key ingredient in many holiday desserts. The ability to hold its shape when whipped makes it ideal for fillings and frostings.
• Soups and Sides: Adding heavy whipping cream to soups, mashed potatoes, or casseroles can enhance their creaminess and create a comforting, satisfying dish perfect for any holiday spread. As you prepare for the upcoming holidays, make sure heavy whipping cream is a staple in the kitchen. Its versatility and richness make it an indispensable ingredient that can elevate both sweet and savory dishes. From the first course to the last bite of dessert, heavy whipping cream is sure to add a touch of indulgence to holiday celebrations.

Homemade Whipped Cream
Elevate your holiday desserts with this simple and delicious homemade whipped cream recipe, using rich and versatile heavy whipping cream. Perfect for topping pies, hot cocoa, or any sweet treat, this whipped cream is a must-have for your festive celebrations. Ingredients:
• 1 cup heavy whipping cream
• 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
1. Place your mixing bowl and whisk or beaters in the refrigerator for about 10-15 minutes. This helps the cream whip faster and gives it a better texture.
2. Pour the heavy whipping cream into the chilled bowl. Add the sugar and vanilla extract.
3. Using a hand mixer or a stand mixer, beat the cream on medium speed until it begins to thicken. Then increase the speed to high and continue whipping until soft peaks form. This means the cream should hold its shape when the beaters are lifted but still be soft enough to gently fall back into place.
4. Be careful not to over-whip, as the cream can turn into butter. You’re looking for a smooth, airy texture that’s perfect for spooning or piping onto your favorite desserts.
5. Serve your homemade whipped cream right away or store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. If storing, give it a quick whisk before serving to restore its fluffy texture.
