Immediate response from Chester Fire Department eliminates dangerous situation

A fire call was issued at 2:42 p.m. to the Chester Fire Department Monday October 7 for a dumpster fire that was “fully engulfed” at 1027 State Street behind the Chester Subway Sandwich Shop.

According the Fire Chief Marty Bert, Chester Police were at the scene immediately and reported that flames were shooting high into the air, almost reaching the power lines on the nearby wooden power pole.

Fire Chief Marty Bert was on scene within minutes. Firemen arrived just minutes later followed by one CFD pumper truck to find a dumpster blazing near the roadway, and near several automobiles, a telephone pole, and close to several businesses and the Gilster Mary-Lee Corporation.

Once on scene, one CFD Firemen doused the blaze with a hose to quickly eliminate what could have escalated into a major fire scene if nearby cars, the wooden utility pole or even worse, the Gilster Mary-Lee Corporation would have caught on fire.

Bert said, “Had the police not been there to call us, it could have been a lot worse. By the time we arrived, most of the cardboard boxes inside the dumpster had burned down significantly. It took us just a few minutes to get it under control.”

“We do not know how it got started, but if nearby cars or the wooden power pole would have caught on fire, there could have been a more dangerous risk to business or others.”
