20th Annual Ste. Genevieve Plein Air Painting Competition next week

STE. GENEVIEVE – “Plein air” painting is French for painting in the open air.  This week, beginning Thursday, September 26th, you may catch some of the veteran outdoor painters either in town or out on the byways setting up their easels.  Some make it look easy.  But Mother Nature throws challenges at outdoor artists, and not just bugs, wind and rain – the fickle sun can change the scene dramatically without warning.  But there are rewards.

Prizes include four Purchase Awards of $300 for painting a specific place or theme, such as the one scheduled during the 6-9pm 4th Friday Art Walk on September 27th.  In addition, there are nine general awards totaling $2,000 that will be chosen by professional judge and former prize-winning competitor, Julie Weigand.  Those awards will be announced at 6:30pm during the reception which runs from 6 until 8pm at the Sainte Genevieve Art Center & Art Museum at 310 Merchant St., on the courthouse square.

But the tenth award winner is selected by YOU – the People’s Choice Award of $200 is given to the artist whose painting receives the most votes.  Cast your ballot starting at the reception Saturday night from 6 to 7:30pm. The winner will be announced before 8pm.  Marvel at all the beautifully fresh art and vote for your favorite.

Registration is open to artists over 18 between 8am-4pm Thursday and Friday at the Art Center.  More information about the competition can be found at www.artstegen.org.  The 20th Annual Ste. Genevieve Plein Air Painting Competition is sponsored by the Sainte Genevieve Art Guild with financial support provided by the Ste. Genevieve County Community Foundation and Dannie’s Sports Tavern.
