STE GENEVIEVE – University of Missouri Extension offers an opportunity to learn about how to successfully transition your farm operation to the next generation at a workshop at the Wurdack Extension and Education Center on October 1.
MU Extension agricultural business specialist Rachel Hopkins says farm transitions can be difficult for families for many reasons. Everyone plays a different role in the operation and there are different ways to make the transition a success for the next generation.
“During the next 20 years, an estimated 70 percent of the farmland will change hands in the US. Farms are ultimately a business, and a business needs a succession plan. If there is not a plan, the farm will either fail with the next generation, be sold or converted to non-farm uses. While these are hard conversations for everyone, not having the conversation often makes the process even worse.” says Hopkins.
The workshop runs from 6 – 8 p.m. at 1300 Progress Parkway Room B, Ste. Genevieve. Register by Sep. 27 at https://extension.missouri.edu/events/successfully-transition-your-farm-0 . Call 573-883-3548 for more information or for special accommodations.
