CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Volunteers are the backbone of the American Red Cross. Their daily support and hard work embody the organization’s lifesaving mission to help people in need. The Red Cross of Missouri and Arkansas is proud to announce Susan Jett as the recipient of the Volunteer of the Year award and Anna Bender as the Rookie of the Year. These awards recognize those outstanding individuals who have dedicated their time and energy to further the Red Cross mission.
Dedication beyond measure
Susan Jett has been volunteering with the Red Cross since 2010. When asked why she does it, Jett said “it is a way to give back that makes my heart and soul smile, gives me a sense of purpose.” Her fondest memories are that of deploying together with her husband, also a Red Crosser, and meeting people from around the country. “During disasters when people are going through incredibly difficult times, just my heart and a bottle of water show that someone cares. When a group of the distressed neighbor ladies bakes you a cake because they learn it’s your birthday, we all cry and hug.”
A role model for all
As Rookie of the Year suggests, Anna Bender is in her first year of volunteering with the Red Cross. She started donating blood regularly after she was introduced to it through a former coworker. “It’s important and I believe in it [the importance of blood donation].” Bender explained. Upon retirement, volunteering naturally felt like the next step and a “good way to get out.” As a Blood Donor Ambassador, Bender greets and registers donors at blood drives. “It’s nice to meet new people, talking to the young people” Bender said, “It’s a worthy cause.”
“Susan and Anna’s commitment to our mission has been nothing short of inspiring,” said Micheal Sullivan, Executive Director, Red Cross of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas, “We are honored to have them both as part of our team and grateful for their dedication.”
