Ste. Genevieve Board of Aldermen meeting

STE. GENEVIEVE – The Ste. Genevieve Board of Aldermen met in regular and work sessions Thursday, May 22.

 

Ste. Genevieve City Administrator announced that work on resurfacing the designated city streets will begin June 2nd.  He said asphalt resurfacing will begin in the portion of the city east of Fourth Street would be the first to be resurfaced.

 

“Market Street past Fourth Street, he said “I don’t have a schedule yet…but would have next week.”

He said once the schedule is available it will be put on the city website.

Concrete work will begin on Parkwood.

 

He also updated the city on the transition to the fire district.

 

Welch said he has been approached by an individual who grew up here and moved away, but is now back and would like to conduct a contest to decide on a new design for the city flag. The idea was not well-received by the board with one aldermen questioned spending money on something that the city doesn’t need to do.

 

The city administrator also reviewed the schedule for the adoption of a new city budget by October 1st.

 

The aldermen also discussed the delay in the construction of the Fourth Street bridge near city hall.  The delay is being caused by the surprise requirement to do an archaeological survey of the site.

 

Reports were presented by a representative of the police department in the absence of the police chief and Corey Litterest from Alliance Water Resources.

 

The police corporal who attended the meeting was questioned about enforcement of UTV rules regarding slow moving triangles and other devices. A member of the board said she had asked for extra police patrols on a certain street due to UTVs speeding and racing down the street.

 

The aldermen approved the consent agenda which included a street closure for the French Heritage Festival on Saturday, June 14.

 

Old Business: None.

New Business:

Enterprise quotes on leasing four Chevy Tahoes for five years for the police department and two one-ton dump trucks with plows and one smaller truck were approved on a unanimous voice vote.

 

Bill No. 4674, a budget amendment was given first round approval on a unanimous voice vote.

The aldermen met in a work session following the regular session.

It included the following items:

Fifth Street speeding. The city administrator said the speed meters were installed and showed considerable number of speeding vehicles with the highest speed 53 miles an hour on Fifth Street between Market and Washington Streets. There was considerable discussion on how to force motorists to slow down. Police Chief Halek will be brought into the discussion.

 

 

Nuisances – David Bova discussed the ordinances in other communities which dealing with multiple vehicles on residential lots. The codes offer several ways of controlling that: no parking in front yards, no parking on lawns, limits on recreational vehicles, parking on approved surfaces only, and requiring vehicles to be parked in garages.

 

Back up text/email set up – During a recent power failure the city’s emergency texting system was down. The police department of the city hall building has emergency power, but the main portion of city hall doesn’t. The fire house on Pine has back up power as well.

 

Parkland REDI Economic Development – Payment of the county’s share share since the county is having financial issues.

 

Progress Parkway Housing Agreement. The agreement was not ready for discussion.

Other business-The aldermen continued their discussion of an award for an individual in the city who is deserving of recognition.
