STE. GENEVIEVE – On Friday, May 16, Ste. Genevieve County R-II School District held its 35th Retirement and Recognition Banquet at the Ste. Genevieve Elks Lodge, an event honoring retirees and celebrating our staff members for their outstanding service for our students and our community.
The following awards were presented throughout the evening: Friend of Education, Employee of the Year, Coach of the Year, and Supervisor of the Year. Staff members who are retiring, as well as those who have served for 25 years, were recognized, along with each building’s Educator of the Year and staff members who have recently completed degree programs and earned awards.
Friend of Education Award
As a district, we recognize that without the support and assistance of our community, we would not be able to provide a complete, well-rounded educational experience for our students. To show our appreciation to our community, we take time during this banquet to recognize organizations and individuals for their contributions and support.
Director of Student Services Dr. Jami Drury and Board of Education member Mrs. Jamie Ballew presented the 2024-2025 Friend of Education award to Tyler Brown, owner of Potential Therapy Services.
Tyler’s contributions extend far beyond his role as a provider of physical therapy services. He consistently offers his time, resources, and positive energy to ensure our students have what they need to succeed. Whether stepping in to provide support or offering guidance, Tyler is always ready to help. Each fall, he attends home varsity football games, volunteering his expertise in athletic training and offering his services free of charge. Throughout the year, he also provides athletic training support for various district events, demonstrating his dedication to ensuring the well-being of our student-athletes.
Tyler’s involvement at SG R-II is driven by a genuine passion for education, and he actively participates in several district initiatives. He has served as a member of various committees, some of which include: the Long-Range Facilities Committee, the Athletic Subcommittee, and the Track & Field Committee. Potential Therapy Services is a sponsor of various events and activities that enhance our school community. Another notable contribution is his involvement in providing professional development opportunities for our staff, including participating in this past year’s SG R-II Health & Wellness Expo. We are deeply grateful for Tyler’s ongoing support and are proud to recognize him today for the positive, lasting influence he has made on our school community.
Employee of the Year Award
Board of Education Secretary Mrs. Geralyn Diesel and Board of Education Member Mr. Josh Gettinger announced the 2024-2025 Employee of the Year award recipient as Terry Hollars, bus driver for the school district.
As the bus driver for our students in Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE), Terry’s care and concern go well beyond the route he drives. He treats each child as if they were his own, always considering their well-being and ensuring they feel safe and valued. Terry also makes it a point to connect with students and staff, even when he’s not directly working with them. His dedication to getting to know others fosters a strong sense of community within our district.
Terry’s enthusiasm and positive energy are felt by everyone he encounters. He adds laughter and happiness wherever he goes. If he learns that students need something, he makes sure it’s available without hesitation. His humor, kindness, and dedication make him an essential part of our SG Family.
Coach of the Year Award
Athletic Director Dr. Jeff Nix presented the 2024-2025 Coach of the Year award to Coach Rachel McDaniel.
Coach Rachel McDaniel has been a cornerstone of the Ste. Genevieve girls golf program since its very first season, and in the 11 years since, her influence has extended far beyond the course. As head coach, Rachel has built a competitive program from the ground up—one defined by excellence, sportsmanship, and personal growth.
Her true impact lies in how she mentors and inspires her athletes. Whether a student is picking up a club for the first time or refining years of experience, she is committed to their individual development. Her approach is rooted in patience and encouragement—and through this, she equips her players not only with stronger swings but with stronger character.
Coach McDaniel is held in high regard throughout the region, both for her leadership and for the integrity of the program she has built. She instills values that will guide her athletes long after graduation: resilience, accountability, and confidence. Her players know they are cared for, and they carry that sense of support with them into every match—and every challenge they face beyond the game.
Supervisor of the Year
Board of Education President Mr. David Bova and Vice President Mr. Eric Basler presented the 2024-2025 Supervisor of the Year award to Dr. Scott Mercer, principal at Ste. Genevieve Middle School.
Dr. Mercer exemplifies what it means to be a leader who listens, supports, and uplifts. Throughout his career, he has been a steady presence through times of change, growth, and innovation—always with humility, humor, and heart. While he is never one to seek the spotlight, Dr. Mercer’s impact is undeniable, felt not only at the middle school but across the entire district.
This year, his leadership reached new heights as he took on two significant roles: head of the district’s Wellness Initiative and a driving force in the launch of our Competency-Based Education (CBE) efforts. In both areas, Dr. Mercer has led with vision and practical support, helping guide a districtwide shift in culture. Through the Motion Connected platform and a series of creative, motivating communications, he has inspired a stronger focus on staff wellness—rallying employees with reminders, resources, and encouragement that made wellness accessible and personal. He even helped coordinate a districtwide health fair, turning wellness into a shared priority.
But what makes Dr. Mercer truly stand out isn’t just what he does—it’s how he does it. He leads with empathy, meets people where they are, and never forgets the human side of leadership. Dr. Mercer’s friendly demeanor and open-door policy make him approachable to everyone in the district. Every morning, he stands at the school entrance with a warm smile and greets each student, making sure every kid feels seen, valued, and welcome. Through every interaction, he reminds us that leadership isn’t about recognition—it’s about relationships.

Teachers of the Year
The Teacher of the Year awards were presented:
- Bloomsdale Elementary: Stephanie Rayoum, Tier II Teacher
- Stephanie Rayoum embodies the heart of Bloomsdale Elementary through her steady compassion, quiet leadership, and unwavering dedication to her students. Her classroom is a calm, welcoming space where children feel safe, supported, and loved. Stephanie’s strength lies in her ability to build deep, positive relationships with every child. She meets each student where they are and helps them grow with patience, understanding, and purpose. She doesn’t apply a one-size-fits-all method; instead, she responds to individual needs with patience and insight, helping each learner discover confidence and strength. Her colleagues describe her as a steady presence and a generous mentor—always willing to share her knowledge and support others. She doesn’t just teach academics—she teaches humanity. Her work reminds us that relationships, compassion, and trust are at the core of every meaningful learning experience.
- Genevieve Elementary: Audra Kingery, Counselor
- Audra Kingery’s work is a powerful reminder that impact doesn’t always come from the front of a classroom—sometimes it’s found in a quiet conversation, a comforting gesture, or simply being the person others know they can count on. As our school counselor, Audra offers something profoundly important: a sense of peace and belonging for every student and staff member who walks through our doors. Students trust her. Staff rely on her. And all of us are better because of her. She listens with empathy, responds with grace, and shows up fully for those around her—no matter the time, the task, or the challenge. Whether she’s helping a child navigate big emotions, offering a reassuring smile to a colleague, or stepping in at a moment’s notice to assist wherever she’s needed, Audra brings steady compassion and unwavering support to every situation. Her calm presence in the midst of chaos is more than comforting—it’s transformative.
- Genevieve Middle School: Erin Stoll, At-Risk Teacher
- Miss Erin Stoll is the kind of educator whose energy, heart, and school spirit ripple far beyond the walls of her classroom. In the classroom, Erin is a motivator, a champion for students who need it most, and a firm but compassionate guide. She meets each student where they are, keeping their individual goals at the center of her work. Her colleagues describe her as a clear communicator and a strong team player—always contributing with professionalism and purpose. Whether she’s connecting with students in the gym before the bell rings or coaching them on the field after school, she’s tuned in to their lives in a way that helps all of us better support them. She’s everywhere—cheering on athletes, rallying around spirit days, and most importantly, showing up for students who need a cheerleader most. It’s rare for a teacher who works with a limited group of students to make such a broad and lasting impression, but Erin does just that. Her influence is woven into the culture of SGMS.
- Genevieve High School: Kenny Rapp, Industrial Technology Teacher
- Kenny Rapp is the kind of educator whose influence can be seen—and felt—throughout Ste. Genevieve High School. His creativity shows up in the details of our building, from hand-built displays to professional-grade awards. He’s a quiet force who makes things happen, no matter the challenge or timeline. When a last-minute need arises, Kenny doesn’t hesitate. He listens, rolls up his sleeves, and delivers solutions that are not only functional, but thoughtful and inspiring. His ability to take a spark of an idea and transform it into something meaningful has become a hallmark of his work. From the classroom to the shop, from the athletic field to the stage, Mr. Rapp brings heart, craftsmanship, and a deep sense of purpose to everything he does. He’s the person students turn to when they need guidance, support, or simply someone who will listen. He helps shape futures, calm anxieties, and remind students that they matter. He makes SGHS stronger, more creative and more compassionate.
