SPRINGFIELD – Illinois State Senators Terry Bryant (58th District) and Jason Plummer (55th District) held a news conference last week to share their opinions that the Illinois Dept. of Corrections is plagued with serious problems and the acting Director is unqualified to run the Department.
“(Last week) State Senator Jason Plummer and I held a press conference to call for the immediate removal of Latoya Hughes as the acting-director of the Illinois Department of Corrections after her reappointment this morning.
“What we’re seeing is not isolated. It is systemic. And it is getting worse under the watch of this administration.
“We need leadership within the Illinois Department of Corrections that is willing to take real action and accountability, not more bureaucratic indifference from the top.”
The Senators said:
- Illinois Department of Corrections facilities around the state have a serious problem with safety for both prison staff and inmates, and the host communities where facilities are located.
- Serious threats to the safety of prison staff and inmates, including inmate drug deaths.
- There’s no cooperation with federal officials to deport illegal aliens released from the state’s prison system.
- The Acting Director of the Department of Corrections is unqualified to run the agency.
