Mo Rep. Mark Sharp issues statement in support of potential special session to keep Chiefs and Royals in Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – State Representative Mark A. Sharp today voiced his strong support for Governor Mike Kehoe’s consideration of a June special legislative session aimed at retaining Missouri’s world-class professional sports franchises.

“The Kansas City Chiefs and Royals are more than just championship-winning teams—they are cornerstones of Missouri’s identity, economy, and community pride,” Sharp, D-Kansas City, said. “Their presence supports thousands of jobs, drives regional tourism, and unites communities across our state.”

Governor Kehoe confirmed Friday that he is weighing a special session to craft an economic development package large enough to fund renovations at Arrowhead Stadium and, potentially, a new downtown ballpark—investments he estimated could total $2.5 billion to $3 billion.

Kehoe’s office emphasized that dates and subject matter are still under discussion, but one goal is to prevent the Chiefs and Royals from exploring relocation options across the state line after last year’s Jackson County vote against extending a local stadium-financing sales tax.

Sharp applauded the Governor’s proactive stance, saying: “I fully support the Governor’s efforts to explore a special session that would allow the legislature to carefully consider a responsible economic development package. We have a unique opportunity to invest in Missouri’s future while ensuring these iconic franchises remain a vital part of our state. I look forward to working with my colleagues, the Governor’s Office, and local stakeholders to craft a solution that reflects the will and interests of all Missourians.”

Alongside the sports-focused package, lawmakers could revisit HB 19, the capital improvements measure that stalled during the regular session. Sharp noted that coupling infrastructure upgrades with sports-facility financing would underscore a commitment to preserving Missouri’s heritage while investing in its economic future. If called, the special session would give legislators a window—likely in early June—to negotiate tools and incentives designed to strengthen Missouri’s competitiveness, safeguard high-profile employers, and ensure transparency and taxpayer accountability in any agreement.

“Missouri has always thrived when we invest in our people, our infrastructure, and our communities,” Sharp said. “Keeping the Chiefs and Royals where they belong—right here in the heart of America—will inspire pride and pay dividends for decades to come.”

Representative Mark A. Sharp, a Democrat, represents Jackson County (District 37) in the Missouri House of Representatives. He was elected in a special election in November 2019.
