JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri House Speaker Jon Patterson gave a statement earlier this week on the court ruling against the Jackson County Tax Assessor, a decisive win in the fight against unfair taxes.
“What the unelected Jackson County assessor did was inexcusable,” Speaker Jon Patterson, R-Lee’s Summit, said. “The House remains committed to advancing legislation that improves accountability, cuts property taxes, and ensures this overreach never happens again.”
“We appreciate the work of Attorney General Andrew Bailey in securing this legal victory as well as the work of Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick investigating this issue,” Patterson continued. “As Republican leaders, we will continue fighting for Missourians against unfair and illegal taxes.”
House legislation relating to property tax relief:
HJRs 23 & 3 – Electing Jackson County Assessor
A proposed constitutional amendment passed by the Missouri House that would require the Jackson County assessor to be an elected position, subject to voter approval. Currently, all counties in Missouri get to elect their assessor, except for Jackson County and St. Louis City.
HB 999 – Strengthening Fairness in Property Tax Assessments
HB 999 aims to reform Missouri’s property tax assessment process by ensuring counties adhere to fair practices. If counties fail to comply with State Tax Commission orders, the State Tax Commission may order Department of Revenue to withhold local sales tax revenue until corrections are made.
HB 903 – Reducing Personal Property Assessments and Provide Tax Relief
HB 903 seeks to reduce personal property tax assessments in Missouri by lowering the assessment rate from 33.3% to 18% incrementally over three years.
HJR 4 – Property Tax Cap to Provide Homeowner Relief
HJR 4 is a proposed constitutional amendment designed to stabilize property tax assessments for residential homeowners. If approved, it would cap future property reassessments at 2% or the change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI), with exceptions for new construction or significant improvements.
