Agriculture Education on the Move™ brings agriculture to Missouri third graders, helps high school students grow as leaders

JEFFERSON CITY, MO. – Educators are planting seeds of knowledge in third-grade classrooms this spring through Agriculture Education on the Move™ (Ag Moves). Missouri Farmers Care, a non-profit coalition of Missouri agricultural organizations, hosts Ag Moves. Passionate educators lead students in fun, hands-on lessons, to show how their lives are connected to agriculture.

Ag Moves teaches students about crops, livestock, soil and water conservation, nutrition, and careers in agriculture using STEM-focused curriculum based on Missouri state standards. Each lesson incorporates fun, interactive activities. Students create soybean germination necklaces, corn plastic, butter, feed rations, soil profiles, and more. Students learn about Missouri farm families and how farmers work all year long to provide food, fuel, and fiber.

“Students gain an understanding about how our food is grown, who grows it, and the countless ways agricultural products support our lives,” said Ashley McCarty, Missouri Farmers Care Executive Director. “Ag Moves builds these connections. Young people are Missouri’s greatest asset. Missouri agriculture appreciates the educators who help their students become tomorrow’s informed consumers.”

Hundreds of Missouri FFA students partner with Missouri Farmers Care to teach Ag Moves to students in local schools each semester. As FFA members educate elementary students, they gain hands-on experience in the classroom and advocate for agriculture in their communities. In 2024, 881 FFA members from 124 FFA chapters helped educate Missouri third graders about agriculture.

“By bringing the farm to the classroom, students are not just learning about agriculture but experiencing it firsthand,” said Heather Fletcher, Ag Moves program director. “Agriculture Education on the Move™ is dedicated to fostering a deep connection between students and the food they eat, nurturing a generation that understands and appreciates the importance of agriculture in our daily lives. As we expand our reach and impact, we are sowing the seeds of curiosity and knowledge in young minds, cultivating a brighter future for both our children and the agricultural industry.”

Through partnerships with FFA members, professional educators, and collegiate interns, Ag Moves reached over 12,600 third-grade students in 2024. The Missouri Farmers Care Foundation, which hosts Ag Moves, provides schools with lessons, educators, and materials at no cost. Elementary schools receiving Ag Moves programming this semester can be found at: Spring 2025 Ag Moves School List — Ag Ed on the Move.

“Agriculture Education on the Move™ continues to make a lasting impact in classrooms across Missouri, sparking curiosity and connecting students to the role of agriculture in their daily lives. By fostering hands-on learning and real-world connections, this program empowers the next generation to appreciate where their food, fiber, and fuel come from,” said Denny Mertz, Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council outreach and education chairman. “With the support of dedicated educators and FFA partners, we’re excited to see this program grow and inspire even more young minds across the state.”

Missouri Farmers Care, a coalition of more than 45 Missouri agriculture groups, funds Ag Moves. Missouri soybean farmers and their checkoff and the MFA Oil Foundation support the program, along with contributions from Missouri Corn Merchandising Council, FCS Financial, MFA Incorporated, Missouri Beef Industry Council, and the Missouri Fertilizer Control Board.
