State Representative Wick Thomas files House Bill 1459 to repeal same-sex marriage ban in Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – State Representative Wick Thomas has introduced House Bill 1459, which seeks to repeal language in Missouri law that prohibits the recognition of same-sex marriages. The bill aims to remove provisions that define marriage exclusively as a union between a man and a woman and ensure that all couples, regardless of gender, receive equal legal recognition.

“Marriage is a basic human right, and states should not interfere with our personal freedom to choose same-sex marriage,” Rep. Thomas, D-Kansas City, said. “All couples deserve to be recognized and respected in this state.”

Currently, Missouri statutes contain provisions that declare same-sex marriages invalid, prohibit the issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples, and refuse to recognize legally contracted same-sex marriages from other jurisdictions. HB 1459 would repeal these discriminatory policies, affirming that all marriages are valid and worthy of equal protection under the law.

“My marriage to my husband should not be in the hands of politicians,” Rep. Thomas added. “It is past time for Missouri to align its laws with the fundamental values of equality and justice.”
