Ruth B. Surman

A funeral will be held Wednesday, February 26, 2025 for 92-year-old Ruth B. Surman of Chester, Illinois, who passed away at 5:06 pm, Thursday, February 20, 2025 at Independence Care Center, Perryville, Missouri. 

 
She was born March 22, 1933 in Vergennes, Illinois, to Gerhardt and Alma (nee Porter) Wohlwend who both preceded her in death.


Ruth married Bernard Surman on August 27, 1949 in Paragould, Arkansas; he preceded her in death on July 8, 1986.

 

She is survived by five children: James Surman, Richard Surman, David (Sheila) Surman, Janet Jacobs, Mary (Bob) Jany; seven granddaughters: Patti (Bruce) Eaton, Amanda Epplin, Michelle Guebert, Kim (Adam) Mehring, Autumn Jacobs, Shelby (Jacob) Ratz and Stephanie Guettermann; 15 great grandchildren: Ashley (Alan) McGuffee, Dustin (Jenna) Bert, Kelly (Chase) Hille, Madi Epplin, Mallory Epplin, Emma Guebert, Ella Guebert, Lauren Mehring, Carter Mehring, Anthony Ruebke, Abigale Ruebke, Addison Ratz, Hudson Ratz, Gavin Baker and Olivia Guettermann; four great great grandchildren: Ella Bert, Audette McGuffee, Walker and Ryder Hille; a sister: Emma Jacoby and several nieces and nephews.


She was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law: Kay Surman, a son-in-law: Tony Jacobs and two brothers: Paul Wohlwend and Leonard Wohlwend, Sr.


She had worked at Kipp’s Restaurant for several years and retired as a cook from Chester Mental Health Center.


Ruth was a member of Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Chester. She was also a member of the Blessed Virgin Sodality and the American Legion Post #487 Auxiliary in Chester. Ruth enjoyed quilting, sewing and cooking.

 

Visitation will be 9-11 a.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at the Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Chester, Illinois


A funeral mass for 92-year-old Ruth B. Surman of Chester, Illinois, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at the Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Chester, Illinois. Father Sebastian Ukoh officiating.

 

Interment will be  in  St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Chester, Illinois.


Memorials may be made to the St. Mary’s Catholic School or to the St. Mary’s Catholic Church
