STE. GENEVIEVE – Come revel in the historic French tradition of the King’s Ball on Saturday, February 1st at the Ste. Genevieve VFW Hall! Youngsters, spirited teenagers, and adults of all ages don French colonial costumes and crowd the floor to dance reels, squares, and other old-time dances to the music provided by fiddler Dennis Stroughmatt and L’Esprit Creole with caller Deborah Hyland.
Visit www.historicstegen.org to ensure that you have a seat. Doors open at 6 p.m., dancing begins at 7 p.m. As of late Thursday afternoon there were about 40 tickets remaining. Organizers recommend getting the tickets on line, to ensure availability.
Bring food (no drinks) and table décor to make the event even more festive! Drinks will be available at the cash bar. If you decorate with candles, be advised that they cannot be lit due to fire regulations.
To choose a king for the year to preside at activities such as the French Heritage Festival and the Holiday Christmas Festival, an object will be hidden in a cake! 2024 Queen Laura will be passing the crown to the 2025 King who finds it. That might be you!
This year the honorary title of Le Chevalier of Ste. Genevieve is being bestowed upon Vern Bauman in recognition of his valiant efforts during the 1993 flood, continued work with the Levee Board and with the Ste. Genevieve Museum and Learning Center, plus his contributions to the establishment of the Ste. Genevieve Middle-Mississippi Wildlife Refuge.
La Dame Carolyn Bach is being honored for her activities with the Art Guild and her ongoing research at the Ste. Genevieve Museum and Learning Center, especially about Audubon verifying the likelihood that the birds displayed there were indeed stuffed by him. These titles are awarded to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the community.
This event is sponsored by the Foundation for Restoration of Ste. Genevieve to enhance their efforts to preserve our history. Come swing your partner in old fashion fun on the first Saturday in February and relive the French tradition of the King’s Ball!
