JEFFERSON CITY — State Sen. Steven Roberts, D-St. Louis, announced Senate Bill 36, which he sponsored, has successfully passed the Senate Judiciary and Civil and Criminal Jurisprudence Committee. This legislation aims to provide compensation to individuals who have been wrongfully convicted in Missouri.
“The passage of SB 36 through the Judiciary Committee marks a significant step toward justice for those who have been unjustly imprisoned,” said Sen. Roberts. “It’s imperative that our state acknowledge the profound injustices these individuals have endured and offer appropriate compensation to help them rebuild their lives.”
With an emphasis on monetary restitution being tied to the amount of time someone was wrongly incarcerated, SB 36 outlines the criteria and process for claiming compensation, aiming to provide a clear and fair pathway for exonerees seeking redress.
Senator Roberts emphasized the importance of the legislation stating, “While we can never fully restore the lost years or experiences, this bill is a crucial step in acknowledging the mistakes of our justice system and providing tangible support to those who have suffered from wrongful convictions.”
