PERRYVILLE – The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 133, Children and Youth Co-chairs, Nancy Wilfong and Anna Reece, along with ALA President, Carol Taylor have been visiting local elementary schools in Perry County to donate Patriotic Books and “I Pledge Allegiance” bookmarks to the school libraries to have as resources for the students. Some funds were also donated by Thrivent.
The Patriotic Books donated are as follows:
“The Poppy Lady” is about Moina Belle Michael, a teacher from Georgia during World War I, who established the red poppy as a symbol to honor and remember soldiers.
“America’s White Table” is set in many mess halls as a symbol for and remembrance to service members fallen, missing or held captive in the line of duty.
In “God Bless Our Country”, the Berenstein Bears and their neighbors celebrate July 4th with a big parade and get a lesson about the blessings of freedom for their country.
“The Wall” is a beautiful moving account from a young child’s perspective about his visit with his father to the Vietnam Veterans Wall to find the name of the grandfather the little boy never knew. The father and son share the sadness and pride of having the grandpa’s name there.
We invite you to encourage elementary children in Perry County to visit their school library and read these inspiring books.
