Sugar Fire: Tuesday night’s operations increase containment

ROLLA  —Mark Twain National Forest firefighters continue to actively fight the Sugar Fire on the Ava/Cassville/Willow Springs Ranger District. The fire is burning in the glades, about 12 miles south/southwest of Ava.  On Tuesday night, firefighters conducted firing operations from roadways to remove fuels between the fire front and containment lines and stop the fire’s progression. This operation was successful, leading to the north and east flanks of the fire being secured. Overall containment is now at 75%.

A spot fire did occur Wednesday morning on the north end. Resources responded quickly and are currently working to stop it from spreading. With more firefighters arriving today, good progress is expected in securing the west and south ends of the fire. Also, rain is forecast for tonight in the area.
