Remembrance event to honor SIU students who have passed away

CARBONDALE, Ill. — A community remembrance event at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will honor all students who have died in recent years, including three Salukis who passed away separately this month.

Everyone is welcome to attend the “Once a Saluki, Always a Saluki” remembrance at Becker Pavilion on Campus Lake from 6 p.m. to sunset on Monday, Sept. 30.

Undergraduate Student Government is hosting the event, which is being planned by students for students and the community. SIU’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will be available to help students address mental health concerns; Student AffairsRecreational Sports and Services and Campus Ministries will provide support. 

Earlier this month, the SIU family lost:

  • Ramesh Muthina, a master’s student in health informatics from India and member of the Indian Student Association.
  • Selena Hubbard, a senior psychology major from Wilmington, Illinois.
  • Henry “Hank” Souders, an automotive technology major from Oak Park, Illinois.

Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to attend to light candles and share stories and memories. In addition, students may contact CAPS by calling 618-453-5371.
