Group seeks creation of Ste. Genevieve Co. Fire Protection District

STE. GENEVIEVE — A proposal to create a fire protection district in Ste. Genevieve County is being launched.

The proposal was posted on the SGC Fire Prot District Facebook page.

The document explains that the six fire departments in Ste. Genevieve County have decided to join forces and is now asking the citizens of the county to support it.

It says such a district is needed to cope with the growing cost of equipment, firehouse maintenance and repairs, PPE, and other necessary operational expenses.

“We are struggling to maintain the proper level of Fire Protection services our residents deserve,” the author of the document stated.

The document goes on to say “There will be two separate proposed Fire Departments/Districts within Ste. Genevieve County if approved by you, the voters, in the April 2025 election.

Ste. Genevieve County Fire Protection District will consolidate the following departments: Zell Volunteer Department, Kinsey Volunteer Fire Department, Ozora Volunteer Fire Department, Weingarten Volunteer Fire Department, and St. Mary’s Fire Department. The Ste. Genevieve City Fire Department will remain an independent fire department – in order to keep its present ISO rating of 4. Joining the Fire Protection District cold lower that rating to as low as a 6.

The document concludes with “We ask that you please take the time to learn about what we are trying to accomplish and support our efforts in the April 2025 election. We will have additional information coming out from now until Election Day, including opportunities to meet with us and ask questions.”

The document states it is from the Ste. Genevieve County Fire Protection District Committee.
