ST. LOUIS – As the summer heat peaks, there’s no better way to cool down and indulge your sweet tooth than with a scoop (or two!) of delicious ice cream.
And what better time to celebrate this iconic frozen treat than during July Ice Cream Month?
From classic sundaes to innovative creations, there are endless ways to enjoy ice cream and let your creativity shine. While ice cream is undoubtedly a treat, it’s also important to consider its nutritional aspects.
“A typical ½-cup serving of ice cream contains approximately 150-250 calories, depending on the flavor and brand. Because ice cream is made from milk, it contains calcium, high-quality protein and other essential vitamins and minerals found in milk and milk products,” said Jessica Kassel, registered dietitian and nutrition educator with St. Louis District Dairy Council. “Although these nutrients are less concentrated in ice cream than in milk, yogurt and cheese, they still make ice cream a nutritious option when compared to other desserts.”
Ever wonder how that creamy goodness is made? Ice cream typically consists of milk, cream, sugar and flavorings, which are blended and churned to incorporate air and create a smooth texture. The mixture is then frozen until it reaches the perfect consistency.
From there, it can be transformed into a variety of delightful treats, from classic cones to extravagant desserts. This July Ice Cream Month, unleash your creativity and try your hand at making some delicious ice cream creations.
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
• Ice Cream Sandwiches: Sandwich your favorite flavor of ice cream between two cookies or brownies for a delightful handheld treat.
• Ice Cream Cake: Layer different flavors of ice cream with cake or brownies to create a show-stopping dessert that’s perfect for summer celebrations.
• Ice Cream Floats: Combine your favorite soda with a scoop of ice cream for a refreshing and nostalgic beverage.
• Ice Cream Pie: Press a layer of softened ice cream into a graham cracker pie crust and freeze until firm. Top with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, or fruit for a simple yet delicious dessert.
• Ice Cream Tacos: Fill waffle tacos with scoops of ice cream and top with a variety of toppings for a fun twist on dessert.
• Ice Cream Truffles: Roll scoops of ice cream in crushed cookies, nuts, or candy and freeze until firm. Drizzle with melted chocolate for an indulgent treat.
