SPRINGFIELD-An initiative of the Illinois Education Association expressing the need for more guidance concerning student discipline, was given final approval in the Illinois House Friday morning.
SB1400 requires the State Board of Education to consult with stakeholders in its drafted and published guidance, and requires the guidance to be drafted and published on or before July 1, 2025. Changes certain references from “early intervention” to “intervention”. Makes changes concerning suspensions, school exclusions, and disciplinary removals to alternative schools.
State Representative David Friess (R-Red Bud) voted in favor of the measure and explained why during floor debate on the measure.
The bill was given approval on a vote of 106-5 and now moves on to the governor for his consideration.
