Graduate Certificate in Agribusiness at Louisiana State University supported by the Welge Food Beyond the Farm Initiative Launches

CHESTER, Ill. – Gilster-Mary Lee is pleased to announce that the LSU Food Beyond the Farm Graduate Certificate in Agribusiness is now accepting enrollments for the fall of 2024.

This program was conceived by the late Don Welge, former President of Gilster-Mary Lee, as a way to provide individuals with the skills needed for success in the food industry, the largest industry in the world.   The need for a strong food supply chain was made clear by the worldwide challenges experienced during Covid-19.

Those earning the certificate will complete 12 credit hours of courses in food processing, supply chain and logistics, and marketing.  The certificate program is a collaboration between the College of Agriculture and the E. J. Ourso College of Business at LSU. It will be delivered via LSU’s state of the art online learning platform, allowing access to students across the country and around the world.

The Food Beyond the Farm Initiative was a passion of Mr. Welge’s during his lifetime.  After his death in 2020, the Welge family and his friends in the food industry worked together with LSU to establish the program as a memorial to him.  Don Welge was a 1957 graduate of LSU and a devoted Tiger fan and active alumnus throughout his life.  He was inducted into the LSU Alumni Hall of Distinction in 2012.
