Ste. Genevieve Co. sale tax receipts continue to fall

STE. GENEVIEVE – The Ste. Genevieve County sales tax revenue continues to under-perform.

The Missouri Department of Revenue deposited the April proceeds May 6 into the county’s accounts at US Bank.

Each of the county’s five accounts: county, road and bridge, law enforcement, and two community center taxes, the original and the “new” tax; brought in about $75,600.

Each of the sales taxes showed a loss of around $2,100 compared to April 2023, and the year to date figures shows each tax is short around $61,000 compared to the first four months of 2023.

Unfortunately the county is not allowed to take money from one account and give it to another, say from law enforcement to road and bridge, so if the proceeds exceeds the needs in one account and another account needs additional revenue, it is not possible to transfer the surplus. The county must spend these taxpayer-approved taxes the way they were approved on the ballot that created them.
