ROMEOVILLE, Ill.– Ian Bollinger of Red Bud (62278) was among the 368 Lewis University student-athletes honored for academic excellence on April 22 with the Brother David Delahanty, FSC Award at the Convocation Hall located on the Romeoville Campus. The Delahanty Award recognizes Flyers who have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or above while balancing the demands of athletics and academics.
Bollinger is playing Mens Golf and studying Finance at Lewis University in Romeoville.
Two student-athletes received special recognition with the Senior Student-Athlete Award. It is given to the male and female senior student-athletes with the highest cumulative grade point average.
Grace Sueflohn on the Women’s Tennis Team is a four-year letter winner with a perfect 4.0 GPA, majoring in organizational communication and public relations/marketing with a minor in digital marketing.
Matthew Senese on the Men’s Swimming Team is a four-year swimmer with a 3.99 GPA, majoring in computer science.
Br. David Delahanty, FSC, served as President of Lewis from June 1982 until his untimely death in October 1987. A personal advocate of physical fitness, Br. David encouraged Lewis students to achieve excellence not only in the academic sphere but also in the athletic arena. Following his death, several members of the Lewis’ athletic teams inquired if they could wear black armbands to mourn the popular president. After much consultation, it was decided that Br. David would have preferred a tribute to athletes based on their academic achievements. The first ceremony took place in 1988.
