Missouri House of Representatives inducts Norm Stewart into Hall of Famous Missourians

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri House Speaker Dean Plocher and the Missouri House of Representatives proudly announce the induction of the iconic Missouri Tigers basketball coach, Norman Eugene “Norm” Stewart, into the esteemed Hall of Famous Missourians.

A native of Shelby County, Missouri, Norm Stewart’s name resonates throughout the annals of Missouri basketball history. Affectionately known as “Stormin’ Norman,” Stewart’s illustrious career spans over three decades, marked by an unwavering commitment to excellence, a passion for the game, and a deep-rooted dedication to his community.

Stewart’s journey began as a standout athlete at the University of Missouri from 1952 to 1956. Following his collegiate career, he briefly pursued professional baseball and basketball before returning to Mizzou as a graduate student and assistant basketball coach in 1957. In 1961, Stewart took the helm as head coach at the University of Northern Iowa, where he enjoyed six successful seasons before returning to lead the Missouri Tigers.

Over the course of 32 remarkable seasons as head coach, Stewart amassed an impressive record of 734 wins, securing eight Big Eight regular season titles, six conference tournament championships, and making 16 NCAA Tournament appearances. His coaching prowess earned him accolades such as Coach of the Year by the UPI in 1982 and the Associated Press in 1994. In 2007, he was enshrined in the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.

Stewart’s impact transcended the basketball court when he was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1989. Undeterred, he channeled his resilience into the fight against cancer, founding the Coaches Vs. Cancer program. Through his efforts, millions of dollars have been raised to support cancer research and assistance for those battling the disease.

Speaker Plocher, recognizing Stewart’s profound influence on the Show-Me State and the University of Missouri, presented the bust of Norm Stewart, which was donated by the Missouri Historical Society, as the newest addition to the Hall of Famous Missourians.

“Norm Stewart’s induction into the Hall of Famous Missourians is not just a recognition of his exceptional contributions to Missouri basketball, but also a celebration of his steadfast commitment to our state. His legacy shines brightly, illuminating the path for future generations of Tigers with its embodiment of resilience, community, and excellence,” House Speaker Dean Plocher, R-Des Peres, said. “Beyond the realm of basketball, Stewart’s influence reaches far and wide, touching the lives of countless individuals with his resilience and dedication to serving others. It is a privilege to acknowledge Coach Stewart’s enduring impact and to warmly welcome him into this prestigious hall, where he rightfully takes his place among the esteemed icons of our great state.”
