Romaine Susann Holman

A funeral will be held Saturday, April 20, 2024 for 74-year-old Romaine Susann Holman of St. Louis who passed away Sunday, April 7, 2024, at Evelyn’s House Hospice in Creve Coeur, Mo.

 

She was born May 20, 1949, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania a daughter of Walter Harold Holman and Maude E. Holman, who both preceded her in death.

 

Romaine is survived by her brother: Lee (Susan) Holman of Greenville, South Carolina, her numerous cousins, many special friends, former colleagues and students.

 

Romaine earned a degree in American History from Warren Wilson College, where she also served as editor of the yearbook; she received her Master of Education from the University of Pittsburgh.

 

Romaine came to Ste. Genevieve, Mo. in 1984 after she answered an ad for a teaching job in the Midwest. She taught at Ste. Genevieve High School and worked as a sportswriter for the Ste. Genevieve Herald before joining the staff at Valle Catholic High School in 1986.

 

At Valle, she was a favorite and beloved educator, coach, and mentor for 28 years, retiring in May 2014.

 

At different points in her Valle career, she served as an assistant basketball coach, freshman football coach, and was instrumental in starting the boys golf team, serving as the head coach from the beginning until her retirement.  Romaine was the athletic director at Valle Catholic High School for 10 years, and at that time, was the longest serving female high school athletic director in Missouri.

 

In addition, Romaine was the faculty moderator for Valle’s National Honor Society chapter and was a member of the St. Louis University’s Standards Review Board for Advance College Credit.

 

Outside of Valle, Romaine was active in her community as a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Elks Lodge 2674, the Ste. Genevieve Golf Club, Rotary Club of Ste. Genevieve, Foundation for the Restoration of Ste. Genevieve Board, and Deacon at First Presbyterian Church.

 

Romaine loved to play and watch many sports, her greatest passions being an avid golfer and die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan. 

 

She was proud of her Irish heritage, loved her pets, loved to travel, and enjoyed keeping in touch with her students throughout their lives.

 

Visitation will be 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024 at the Basler Funeral Home in Ste. Genevieve, Mo.

 

A funeral for 74-year-old Romaine Susann Holman of St. Louis will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024. Pastor Steve Matthews will preside and Reverend Richard Wiskus will assist.

 

Placement of cremains will be at Valle Spring Columbarium.
