Missouri House passes HB 1483: Boosting tourism through sporting event tax incentives

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – In a decisive move toward stimulating tourism and economic growth, the Missouri House has passed HB 1483, a bill that would reauthorize the state to offer tax incentives to nonprofit organizations sponsoring qualifying sporting events. The bill, sponsored by State Representative Brad Christ, received overwhelming support in the House, underscoring its potential to invigorate local economies across the state.

HB 1483 establishes a framework for incentivizing nonprofit organizations to host sporting events, thereby drawing visitors and revenue to Missouri communities. Under the bill, certified sponsors of sporting events would be eligible for refundable tax incentives based on ticket sales or registered participants, as outlined in the legislation. Rep. Christ, the bill’s sponsor, noted that the House has passed several times over the past years, stating that the tax incentives have had immense success.

“It’s brought over 100 sporting tournaments and 600,000 visitors to Missouri, and produced over $500 million in visitor spending in the state,” Christ, R-St. Louis, said. “HB 1483 represents a significant opportunity for Missouri to showcase its sports tourism potential. By providing tax incentives to certified sponsors, we’re not only encouraging the hosting of exciting sporting events but also driving economic activity in our communities.”

House Speaker Dean Plocher called the move a win for Missouri’s economy and tourism industry, saying “This legislation underscores our commitment to fostering growth and prosperity throughout the state. By incentivizing sporting events, we’re positioning Missouri as a premier destination for athletes and spectators alike.”

The bill reflects a collaborative effort to leverage Missouri’s assets and attract visitors from near and far. Proponents of the legislation anticipate a surge in tourism and economic activity, bolstering local businesses and communities statewide.

HB 1483 will now advance to the Missouri Senate for further consideration.
