STE. GENEVIEVE – Residents and shop owners on N. Main Street hope to kick off a new tradition in Ste. Genevieve next month, by reviving an ancient French one…Mardi Gras.
The “Mardi Gras on North Main” celebration will take place on February 9 from 4pm to 8 pm, centered on the 100 block of N. Main Street.
“It pretty much started out as an idea for a block party,” a member of the informal organizing committee said. “It’s just sort of grown from there into a celebration where everyone is welcome.”
The event will feature live Dixieland music, Cajun food, costume and trivia contests, Mardi Gras art, and other activities offered by local businesses and residents. It will conclude with an after party at Dr. Hertich’s Beer Cellar. The festival area will reach from just south of Jefferson Street to just north of Washington.
“We think it’ll be a fun event with great music, traditional Mardi Gras activities and a few surprises,” the organizer said. “And beads. Lots of Mardi Gras beads.”
