Festus man charged in alleged assault on law enforcement officer

HILLSBORO – Sheriff Dave Marshak announces an arrest and charges in an Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer case that resulted in a gunshot and injuries to the suspect and a Deputy.

32-year-old Sean Ramsey of Festus is charged with Assault 1st Degree Or Attempt – Serious Physical Injury Or Special Victim, Disarming A Peace Officer Or Correctional Officer While Performing Official Duty, Unlawful Possession Of A Firearm, Resisting Arrest/Detention/Stop By Fleeing – Creating A Substantial Risk Of Serious Injury/Death To Any Person, and two counts of Armed Criminal Action.

Ramsey allegedly assaulted a Sheriff’s Office Deputy when that Deputy attempted to detain Ramsey during an investigation into a stolen vehicle. During the struggle, Ramsey allegedly reached for the firearm on the Deputy’s belt and fired a shot. Fortunately, nobody was hit by the bullet. The Deputy got control of Ramsey and held him until supporting Deputies arrived and helped put Ramsey in handcuffs.

Both the Deputy and Ramsey were transported to a local hospital for treatment for injuries suffered during the altercation. Both are expected to make a full recovery.

Ramsey is being held at the Jefferson County Jail without bond.

The investigation is still very active at this time.

The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney Trisha Stefanski and her office for their quick work to file charges in this case.
