SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Senator Terri Bryant (R-Murphysboro) released the following statements in response to the proposed agreement that the state would no longer seek enforcement of the controversial law which gave the Illinois Attorney General broad authority to target non-abortion-providing pregnancy centers with so-called deceptive practices:
“When this law was debated in the Senate, I vigorously called out the proposal as unconstitutional. I also questioned the true motive behind the proposal since the Attorney General already had the power to go after deceptive tactics and fraud through consumer protection laws.
“I am glad to see that the Attorney General is finally admitting that he already had the power to go after these so-called ‘deceptive practices,’ which I think confirms the suspicions that the true purpose of his legislation was to target and punish non-abortion-providing pregnancy centers for refusing to conform to the ideological beliefs of the Majority Party.”
