Lady Jackets go 2-3 to close out Weeks 3 and 4

CHS beats Gibault and Sparta and fall to Carlyle, Valle and Okawville

CHESTER – After falling to Wesclin to start off Week 3 of the 2023-24 season, the Chester High School Lady Jackets beat Gibault at home, 60-50, and lost to Carlyle, 64-18, to close out Week 3.

Chester High School Lady Jacket Emma Diskey (35) a senior guard, led the team in scoring in two of the last five recent games. Against Sparta Monday December 4 Diskey was the only player in double figures with 10 points in the 45-27 win over the Lady Bulldogs. In addition, she added 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. In Week 4, the Jackets won at Sparta, 45-27, then fell at Valle, 48-39, and at Okawville, 73-19. After four weeks of competition, the Lady Jackets have an overall record of 4-5 and a Cahokia Conference, Illinois Division record of 1-3.

Chester 60-Gibault Catholic 50 (11-28-23)

Chester hosted the Lady Hawks Tuesday November 28 at Colbert Gymnasium. CHS led, 10-7 after the first quarter. In the second quarter the Jackets outscored the Hawks, 19-13 to take a 29-20 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was tight with Chester edging Gibault by just one point, 13-12 to lead, 42-32 after three quarters. The last quarter was a high scoring affair with both teams scoring 18 points apiece. The Lady Jackets won, 60-50.

In the win, CHS had three players in double figures including Lexi Mott (13), Aubrey Colvis (12) and Jesse Stumpe (11). Other contributors included Emma Diskey (9), Rylie Conley (5), Aubrey Coleman (5), Jazzi Merideth (4), and Lilly Diskey (3).

Gibault was led by Briana Baldridge (19) and Alma Sanchez (17). Others scorers were Myah Ticer (6), Nataly Kellermane (2), Karmon Grohmann (2) and Libby Mesch (1).

With the win, the Lady Jackets improved to 3-2 overall and remained 0-1 in the Cahokia Conference. The JV lost, 36-22.

Carlyle 64-Chester 23 (11-30-23)

The Lady Jackets closed out their rare 3-game home stand on Thursday November 30 when Carlyle came to town. The Lady Indians were veteran, tough, and talented and they were too much for the young Lady Jackets to handle.

The Indians shut out the Jackets in the first quarter, 21-0. The second quarter was a nicer 9-4 outing for the Indians and they led, 30-4 at halftime.

After halftime Carlyle came out with another outstanding offensive effort. Up by 26 points already, the Lady Indians outscored Chester, 17-6 in the third quarter and led, 47-10 going into the 4th quarter. The fourth quarter was a 17-8 performance for Carlyle to take home the win, 64-18.

The Jackets did not have any player score in double figures. Lexi Mott paced the team with 8 points followed by Lillian Diskey (5), Jesse Stumpe (3), and Aubrey Colvis (2).

Chester committed 29 turnovers in the loss. CHS grabbed just 16 rebounds led by Lexi Mott (5) and Emma Diskey (4). Jazzi Merideth dished out three assists and recorded 5 steals and 2 rebounds.

Carlyle had two players score in double figures including Hoffman (14) and E. Meyer (10). In addition, seven other players contributed offensively including, Schneink (8), Edwards (7), Harris (7), Rolfingsmeyer (6), Pensing (6), Stanart (4), and Brammeier (2).

With the loss, Chester closed out Week 3 with an overall record of 3-3 and a Cahokia Conference record of 0-2. The JV lost, 52-31.

Lady Jackets 45-Lady Bulldogs 27 (12-4-23)

The Lady Jackets had a rare 3-game road swing in Week 4 with games at Sparta, Valle Catholic, and Okawville. The Jackets started the week at Sparta Monday December 4.

The first quarter was a lock with the Jackets and Bulldogs each scoring 8 points. In the second frame, Chester outscored Sparta, 11-7 to take a 5-point, 19-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the third period, the Lady Jackets came back strong and outscored the Bulldogs by seven points, 15-8, to lead, 34-23, after three quarters of competition. Down the final stretch, CHS outscored SHS, 11-54, to win the game, 45-27.

In the win, Chester had offensive contributions from nine different players. Just one scored in double figures. Emma Diskey led the team with 10 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists.

Other offensive contributors included Lexi Mott with 8 points, 3 steals, 1 assist, and 1 block; Rylie Conley with 6 points, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds; Aubrey Colvis with 4 points, and 4 rebounds; Lillian Diskey with 4 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal; Jazzi Merideth with 3 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal; B. Hartman with 3 points; and Aubrey Coleman with 2 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 block. Jessica Stumpe recorded 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal.

Sparta was led by Kenzie Pierce who had 11 points. She was followed by Serenity Richardson (5), Maddie Schulein (5), Chloe Copple (4), and Alexis Tadlock (2). With the win, the Lady Jackets improved to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Valle Catholic 48-Chester Lady Jackets 39

The second game of the Week 4 road swing was at Ste. Genevieve, Mo. when the Jackets played at Valle Catholic High School.

In the first quarter the Lady Warriors outscored the Lady Jackets by seven points, 16-9. In the second quarter Valle outscored CHS, 10-7 to lead by ten points, 26-16 at the half.

After the halftime popcorn break, the Lady Jackets came back strong and outscored the Lady Warriors, 12-6 to get within 4 points, 32-28 after three quarters of battle. Chester continued to score in the 4th adding 11 more points to their total of 28 points.  Unfortunately, Valle also scored 16 points to win the game by nine points, 48-39.

One again, Chester could only get double digit scoring from one player. Lexi Mott scored 12 points. She was supported by Lillian Diskey (8), Emma Diskey (8), Aubrey Colvis (6), and Rylie Conley (5).

 Lexi Mott also led the team in rebounding with 9 boards. She further added 4 steals. Aubrey Colvis added 7 rebounds and 2 steals.  Jazzi Merideth led the team in assists with three. She also contributed 2 rebounds and 1 block. Jesse Stumpe had 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals. 

Valle had scoring from 8 players, two of which scored in double figures. M. Houg had 12 points and P. Gielow scored 11 points. Other scorers included A. Weiler (9), B. Weibrecht (8), A. Weibrecht (3), N. Gegg (2), L. Ritter (2), and A. Bley (1).

With the loss, the Lady Jackets evened their overall record to 4-4. Their Cahokia Conference record remained at 1-2.

Okawville 73-Chester 19 (12-7-23)

The final game of Week 4 was a long road trip to Okawville to take on the Lady Rockets. The Rockets were apparently using their full after-burners against the Lady Jackets, however, as they proceeded to dismantle CHS to a tune of 73-19.

The Rockets soared to a huge 20-4 lead after just one quarter of play. In the second quarter it wasn’t much better as Okawville outscored Chester, 15-5, to take a significant, 35-9 lead into the locker room at halftime.

After the break, the Rockets continued to burn rocket fuel at a high rate as they outscored the Lady Jackets, 24-7, for a massive, 43-point lead, 59-16, after the third period. Down the stretch, Okawville added another 14 points to Chester’s three to win he contest by 54 points, 73-19.

In the loss, the Lady Jackets only had five players score, and none were in double figures. Emma Diskey led the scoring with seven points. She was followed by four girls who scored three-points apiece. Those four players included Jesse Stumpe, Riley Lochhead, Aubrey Colvis, and Lexi Mott.

Mott led the team in rebounding with five. Aubrey Colvis had four boards. Lillian Diskey led in assists with two. Merideth, Stumpe, and Lillian Diskey each had one steal apiece.

All but three-of-the-13-Lady Rockets scored in the game. Just one was in double figures, Krous recorded 19 points. Other offensive contributors included Wienstroer (9), Hasheider (8), Tepe (7), Sawicki (7), K. Hackstadt (6), J. Hackstadt (7), A. Harre (4), Bening (4), and Obermeier (2).

With the loss, the Lady Jackets ended their 3-game road trip and Week No. 4 of the 2023-24 season. CHS now has an overall record of 4-5 and a Cahokia Conference, Illinois Division record of 1-3.

Up next for the Lady Jackets will be another week away from the friendly confines of Chester High School’s Colbert Memorial Gymnasium on Rocky Bridges Court.

Week 5 will be spent at the 2023 Gibault Candy Cane Classic Girls Basketball Tournament. Chester will play Tuesday December 12, Thursday December 14, and close the tournament Saturday December 16.
