SIU Football moves up to No. 5 in the country

Missouri Valley Football Conference remains No. 1

By Jim Beers

CHESTER – The National Football Rankings came out Monday October 2 for Football Championship Sub-Division (FCS) teams of NCAA Division I Football.

The Salukis were ranked No. 5 in one major poll and No. 6 in the other major poll. SIU was No. 5 in the American Football Coaches Association Poll and No.6 in the Stats Perform FCS National Awards Poll.

The Missouri Valley Football Conference had six teams ranked in the Top-25 of the Coaches Poll. Those six teams are as follow:

No. 1: South Dakota State

No. 5 Southern Illinois

No. 8: North Dakota State

No. 15: North Dakota

No. 21: South Dakota

No. 22: Illinois State

In this poll two other MVFC teams received votes including Northern Iowa and Youngstown State.

The Missouri Valley Football Conference had five teams in the Stats Perform FCS National Awards Poll. Those five teams are listed as follow:

No. 1: South Dakota State

No. 6: Southern Illinois

No. 7: North Dakota State

No. 15: South Dakota

No. 16: North Dakota

Two other MVFC teams also received votes in this week’s poll including Northern Iowa and Youngstown State.

The Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) was ranked as the No. 1 FCS Conference in the country in the Sagarin Ratings. The Top-8 FCS conferences include:

No. 1: Missouri Valley

No. 2: Big Sky

No. 3: United Athletic

No. 4: CAA Football

No. 5: Ivy League

No. 6: Southern

No. 7: Big South/Ohio Valley

No. 8: Southland

2023 marks the 62nd time in the history of the Missouri Valley Football Conference that six MVFC teams have been ranked in the Top-25 in the same poll. It is the first time this season. Equally impressive is the fact that 9-of-12 MVFC teams are currently ranked in the Top-27 of the Sagarin Ratings. Of those, seven are ranked in the Top-14, five are in the Top-9, and three are in the Top-4 in the USA,

With the win over Missouri State last week, the Salukis begin the 2023 season with an undefeated 4-0 record. The last time SIU started 4-0 was 2007 when current Head Coach, Nick Hill, from DuQuoin, was the Saluki quarterback. Currently, the Dawgs are one of only three FCS teams that remain undefeated including Top-Ranked South Dakota State (4-0), also a member of the MVFC, and Harvard (3-0). SIU’s current ranking is the highest since October 21, 2021.

This week the Salukis travel to Youngstown State to battle the Penguins. Youngstown has had the Salukis’ number the past two years giving the Dawgs, back-to-back losses, both at home and on the road. Coach Nick Hill is determined to get the Dawgs back on track this season and bring home a win from the Penguins.
