Recreational passage at Costello Lock and Dam restricted

MODOC, Ill. — Beginning immediately, recreational lockages will be restricted at the Jerry F. Costello Lock & Dam in Modoc, Ill. (4800 Lock and Dam Road). The Lock is taking action to manage a sustainable pool for all boat traffic in order to prevent unnecessary water loss because of very low water conditions.

The schedule is as follows: upbound lockages from the Mississippi River side will start on the odd numbered hours and downbound lockages from the Kaskaskia River side on the even numbered hours.

The Project is again attempting to conserve water in hopes of maintaining the required pool level to keep the Lock open to all traffic until the Kaskaskia River level increases. This new schedule will be in effect until further notice.

Also, the boat ramp at the lower end of the Project will be closed until the Mississippi River level at the Chester, Ill. river gauge reaches 10 feet. This is to keep boats from falling off the end of the ramp and damaging watercraft and trailers. The upstream boat ramp remains open.
