Jefferson County sheriff describes screwdriver attack on deputy

HILLSBORO – Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak has announced an arrest and charges against a man accused of assaulting one of his deputies with a screwdriver.

A second suspect is accused of interfering with a felony arrest.

The incident led to a standoff involving negotiators, SWAT officers and a canine.

47-year-old Nicholas Davis of Dittmer is charged with Assault 1st Degree, Special Victim (Law Enforcement Officer) and Armed Criminal Action.

45-year-old Amanda Davis of Dittmer is charged with Resisting/Interfering With Arrest For a Felony.

On July 7th, the Deputy conducted a traffic stop in a driveway in the 9500 block of Jones Creek Road. During the stop and without provocation, Nicholas Davis allegedly exited his home and yelled at the Deputy while aggressively approaching him holding a large, flathead screwdriver. The deputy ordered Davis to back away and Davis ignored. Acting in self-defense, the Deputy sprayed Davis with OC spray. As the Deputy tried to make an arrest, Davis spun and allegedly struck the Deputy in the chest with the screwdriver. Davis dropped the screwdriver, but continued to struggle as the Deputy tried again to make an arrest.

At that time, Amanda Davis allegedly exited the home, lunged toward the Deputy, grabbed him by the back and attempted to pull the Deputy away from Nicholas. The Deputy then backed away and both suspects fled inside.

Additional personnel arrived, including negotiators, the SWAT Team, and a Canine Deputy. They formed a perimeter around the home and made numerous announcements for the suspects to come outside.

After nearly five hours, Nicholas exited the home, yelling at Deputies.

SWAT Deputies ordered Nicholas to show them his hands and get on the ground, which he refused. Nicholas continued to advance and a SWAT Deputy fired bean bag rounds, striking Nicholas three times. SWAT Deputies attempted to arrest Nicholas, but he resisted, despite warnings that he would be bitten by a canine. At that time, the canine delivered a bite to Nicholas’ leg and he was taken into custody.

Shortly after, Amanda Davis exited the home and was taken into custody without incident.

Nicholas Davis was examined on-scene by EMS personnel who then transported him to a local hospital under the supervision of a Deputy. Amanda Davis was booked at the Jefferson County Jail where she is being held without bond. Nicholas Davis will be held at the jail without bond once he is released from the hospital.

The Sheriff’s Office Command Staff is grateful for the men and women who put themselves in harm’s way every day to help maintain law and order in Jefferson County.

The Sheriff would also like to thank the members of Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney Trisha Stefanski’s office for their quick work to apply for charges in this case and Judge Brenda Stacey for signing the no-bond warrants.
