Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland honors the Girl Scout Tree Promise

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – To combat environmental injustice, Girl Scouts are taking action with The Girl Scout Tree Promise!

All over the world climate change is damaging the ability of forests to grow back on their own. In cities, trees help cool communities, reducing the heat island effect created by buildings, machines, and pavement that hold heat. Tree planting provides a habitat for wildlife, creates shade on hot summer days, cleans water, and removes asthma-causing air pollution.

In honor of Arbor Day, Girl Scouts have pledged to take 5 million actions to address climate change including planting, protecting, and honoring trees to support wildlife conservation and ease the negative effects of climate change. Girl Scouts everywhere are being called to help by planting, protecting, and honoring trees in their backyards, communities, states, across the country, and even across the world. Every member and friend of the movement is being asked to come together to support the Girl Scout Tree Promise. Join us in planting a tree today!

Why must we act now?

·         By taking five million actions to address climate change, Girl Scouts are adding our leadership to a growing global movement of people who are accelerating the climate solutions we need to make our world a better place.

·         Trees currently capture the annual equivalent of 15 percent of U.S. carbon emissions but have the potential to capture 27 percent. Planting and protecting trees help us bring the benefits of trees to the neighborhoods that need them the most.

·         Participating in climate action events, climate challenges, and engaging in environmental education activities supports the scientists and environmental heroes who make a difference daily.
