STE. GENEVIEVE – The City of Ste. Genevieve has distributed a long range flood risk forecast from the National Weather Service and National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration.
That forecast calls for a 60 percent chance of minor to moderate flooding on the Mississippi River at Chester through May, with an updated forecast to be released by the end of May.
In the letter, signed by Comunity Development Administrator David Bova, it is noted that the city is protected by a levee of approximately 50-feet. (It is recalled that the Flood of 1993 which came before the levee was constructed crested at nearly 50-feet on August 7, 1993)
Bova said the levee protects 321 structures, approximately 814 persons and is valued at $37.8 million.
He also stated that those within the protection of the levee should take precautions in case the levee is breached. While a levee failure is not anticipated the city would like residents to be prepared should that occur.
The second page of the two-page document lists items to prepare to be a ready as possible should the levee fail.
